“It is difficult to imagine a more lovely spot…it commands some of the most delightful views of Bath.” (Bath Chronicle, 1844)
Bath Abbey cemetery opened in 1844 after the under-floor burials at the Abbey reached capacity. Designed by John Claudius Loudon, there are 6,335 burials which include key local and national figures from the Victorian period and 20th century. It was closed in 1995 and Bath & North East Somerset council maintain the site. Abbey staff and volunteers will reveal fascinating stories about the memorials for this special Heritage Open Day event.
Free guided tours at 10.00, 11.00, 12.00. 20 people maximum on each tour, book tickets in advance on the Bath Abbey website. Maximum 2 tickets per person. Tours will last approximately an hour.
Meeting place: Main gate closest to Perrymead.
Please be aware that the tour will cover uneven ground and involve standing throughout. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing. There will also be an informative display by the Cemetery chapel with volunteers plus fun activities for families, aged 4+.
Refreshments will be available to buy.
It takes 15 minutes to walk to the Cemetery from the city centre including up a moderate hill. It’s on Prior Park Road opposite the junction with Church St. The pedestrian entry will be clearly signposted on the day. There is no parking on that road or on the cemetery site itself but the nearest road for parking is Perrymead. Buses from the city centre to Combe Down stop outside the main gate: https://www.firstgroup.com/bristol-bath-and-west/plan-journey/journey-planner/
Access: The cemetery is on quite a steep incline with many overgrown areas but there are some mowed, accessible paths for walking. Please be aware that the guided tour route is not wheelchair accessible but the displays outside the Chapel are in a reasonably accessible area.
Please note that the tour will involve standing for an hour, moving between memorials. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

Join us for an illuminating evening at Bath Abbey as we shine new light on Saint Alphege, who was born in Bath in 953, became Abbot of Bath Abbey in the early 980s and Archbishop of Canterbury in 1006, before his untimely death in 1012 at the hands of Danish Vikings. Alphege was venerated as a saint and martyr immediately after his death, for his heroic Christian example of peace-making, social justice and generosity.
Programme highlights:
- Talk by Dr Giles Mercer – The Importance of Alphege for Today’s World
How the wisdom of a tenth-century monk can help us navigate the challenges of modern life. Dr Mercer will explore Alphege’s profound insights on valuing people, courageous leadership, and the balance of inner prayer with outward action - especially relevant in today’s diverse, multi-faith society. - Neil Ireson – The Saint Alphege Window
Hear from renowned stained glass artist Neil Ireson, commissioned by Bath Abbey to create a new stained glass window commemorating Saint Alphege. Neil will share exclusive updates on his design and creative process. Neil's stunning hand-drawn design sketch for the Saint Alphege Window is shown in the image above. - Dr Cathryn Spence – The History of Bath Abbey’s Stained Glass
Bath Abbey’s Curator introduces a new exhibition on the Abbey’s stained glass, which guests will be able to view in the Discovery Museum after the talks.
The evening will include opportunities for Q&A with the speakers. Complimentary prosecco, non-alcoholic fizz and canapés will be served.
